Mick couldn’t believe what he heard. Flann had gone too far. “Are you sure it was Flann’s doing? I mean, you said he wasn’t there.”

“I’m sure, Mick. Why else would Molly have been alone in the yard today? She hasn’t been allowed to be away from the man in weeks. Then I drive in today and it’s like she’s waiting for me.” He heard the agitation in her voice.

“No one else knows the farm like he does. Besides you and me, that is. No one else would have known about that trough. It’s so out of the way. If it wasn’t for Molly, I’m sure this would never have been known for years.”

“I-I don’t know what to say, love.” His head spun with thoughts of the things he’d like to do to the bastard when he got his hands on him.

“Say you’ll come home, Mick. Please.”

He didn’t have to think about. He didn’t know if it was the sound of her crying, her pleading that she needed him, or what Flann had done, but he was going home.

“Aye. I’ll come home.” He ran his fingers through his hair and let out a long, slow breath to calm down. “I’ll leave tonight.”

He heard Kate sniffle into the phone. “Thank you. I-I don’t know what else to do.”

“You can’t do anything more than you have, Kate. I shouldn’t have put you in this position, and now it’s come to this. I take the blame for it.”

“The only person to blame is Flann. You thought he was okay because he made you believe he was the right man for the job. I’ve seen a different side of him.”

“I know that now. I feel awful that this has happened,” he said.

“Well, when you get home, we can sort this out.”

“We?”

There was a pause on the line. “Yes, I suppose we will.”

Mick liked the sound of that. We.

He thought he would feel some apprehension about going back to the farm. He normally did. The thought he would be seeing Kate again made his heart beat quicker.

“I’ll have to stop at the flat for a few things, but it won’t take long. I should be home in about three hours.”

“I’ll be here.” To his surprise, he found he liked the idea of Kate waiting for him.

“It’ll be late. I can see you tomorrow.”

“Dad changed the locks after the break-in so I’ll have to let you in.”

“You could hide the key.”

“I’d rather not take the chance. I was planning on staying over, anyway—to keep an eye on Molly and the pup. I don’t want to move them unless I have to. Now I know you’re coming home, I’ll put fresh sheets on your bed and have Mum bring over a few things for the fridge.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“That was part of the deal. Now that you’re coming home, you can take over and I can try getting my job back.”

Mick winced. “I’m really sorry about the job, Kate. If I’d known how badly things would turn out—”

“You wouldn’t have done anything differently.
